El SLS es feo y está anticuado

No me gusta el Space Launch System, este pedazo de chatarra que ha presentado la NASA, el mecanismo lanzador que, en teoría, deberá propulsar futuras misiones tripuladas a la Luna y Marte. No me gusta porque es una propuesta tecnológicamente desfasada. La cancelación del Ares V, el cohete precedente, se justificó por su elevado precio y su diseño obsoleto, un "Saturn V con esteroides", como lo definió la NASA. Iluso de mí, pensé que este descarte, aunque retrasara mi viejo sueño de ver llegar al hombre a Marte, supondría un paso adelante en el desarrollo de nuevos sistemas de lanzamiento como raíles electromagnéticos y aviones-cohete de una sola etapa para alcanzar la órbita, y de cohetes nucleares o de plasma (como el VASIMIR) para el salto interplanetario. Una revolución. Pero nada de esto. El consuelo que me queda es que, probablemente, el SLS también será cancelado por Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, o Barack Obama si sale reelegido.

Por una vez, me quedo con el análisis de un político, el representante republicano Dana Rohrabacher: "Today, NASA announced its new design for a deep space exploration system, including a new ‘monster rocket’ based on 40-year-old Space Shuttle technology in an attempt to recapture the glory days of the Apollo Saturn V. To meet the challenges of the 21st century we need bold, creative thinking and new technology development, like on-orbit fuel depots. Nostalgic rocketry is not how great nations invent their future. There's nothing new or innovative in this approach, especially its astronomical price tag, and that's the real tragedy. Unfortunately, after a number of years, perhaps during development or after just a few flights like [the Saturn V], budget pressures will bring this program to an end. Jobs that some politicians are bragging today about saving will be gone, while the new jobs based on new technologies and new enterprises will remain uncreated, because we chose repeating the past over inventing the future."
